I was first attracted to working with washi
paper while living in Japan. I was also attracted to a number of bar
hostesses, but that is another story. Much of the inspiration for my
work emerges from the paper itself, with the fibers, textures and colors
of the paper integral to the final composition. The fibrous elements
from within the papers provide the work with a natural feel that I hope
is evident to you.
I juxtapose geometric
shapes with torn edges to provide contrast within the pieces. The rolled
edges of some of the paper pieces add depth, three-dimensionality, and
continuity of layered lines. Additionally, manipulating the edge of the
paper softens the line, allowing the geometric shapes to harmonize with
the natural fibers of the paper.
Because I consider the
matting and framing an integral part of the artwork, I hand tool each
frame individually. Working with the art piece and the natural
qualities of the wood, I
sincerely hope that you enjoy my work.
